Dr Sir

I was in Springfield during the Senatorial Contest until the question was decided in favor of our mutual Friend. I Expected to have met you there but was disapointed. I wished for an opportunity of talking with You & Governor Yates about what I Seldom [do?] Myself. I se men of whose Capasity and faith to our party are at least questionable Continually asking for and geting place under this administration while those who in 1860 Struggled through the Contest and have defended Evry act of the President & Governor have to Stand back or at least are not noticed. I have never asked for any thing for myself but nevertheless I feel none the less deserving. Excuse me for Saying So. I worked for Mr. Lincoln when we were in the old Congressional district before the Mexican War and after in 1858. I Canvased this Reprasentation district for him against Douglas.

I Spent money and time in 1860 & This past Canvass. I worked hard last time and Spent much money, and notwithstanding this I would not Say one word if I did not Se men Constantly Rewarded who done nothing for, but much against the administration. Mr. Green, You have long known me both as a Citizen & Lawyer. You have heard me on the Stump and at the bar You can judge wither I am qualifyed and otherwise fited for the Bench. A Judgship is what I want and I approach You first and Solisit Your aid and influence with the President. In 1860 Mr Pitt, Kellogg
was our Elector he received the appointment of Chief Justice of Nebraska. He probably will now Resign to attain Some other place. I know I am (this to you alone) A better Lawyer than he Ever dreamed of being I know I have defended Mr. Lincolns Administration with the Zeal & Earnestness of any one not because of my Friendship for him personally but because I believed his pollicy right. The Commencement of the new term of his Presidency will be attended with many new appointments. Will You a Personal Friend of the President & of Senator Yates try to do Something for me.

Please answer me frankly. I will take it as a favor if You will Speak out fully your mind and if You feel that your influence would be used in a propper manner. please write to the President in your own way & to Senator Yates Concerning this thing. Let me assure you that you are the first man that has Received from me any instructions in this direction & to the [purpose?] of this letter. And having in You the Confidence I have I Shall abide the action You may So proffer to take in Regard to my Claims. Will you write to me Soon Giving me your views.

My term under our Organic Act is five years & will not therefore expire until July '66. I think if Mr Lincoln understood this and knew my status here he would not hesitate to retain me through my term, I demand nothing further. But I would like to know definitely what to expect. Will you do me the very great favor to speak to him on the subject & drop me a line at your earliest convenience.

Will you be good enough to

say to "Pitt" that John Chapman of Cass County now in the Council, is a candidate for Marshal of the Territory. Mr. Chapman aided me materially in getting up this petition for our mutual friend Dubois. He is a very sharp & effective politician. His appointment would give great satisfaction. I trust you will not vote me a bore for troubling you in these matters. In this long account I can pay up even a pretty large balance. I hope You and I are to live in the west until we trans-Missouri people shall have more political power to unite with that of Illinois to conserve the interests of the west and of western men.

I enclose a slip from the Republican of this city containing an item of gossip which I suppose really amounts to nothing.

On account of the position taken by one Senator & Representative. The former had of his own accord assured several who had conferred with him that he sho Support you first and last & Mr Ford had taken a great deal of pains

But I console myself with the fact as I understand they both admitted before the test at Springield that they went against or Contrary to the wishes of a large Majority of their Constituents. I regretted exceedingly, I could not be at Springfield during the Contest but as I wrote you rec'd a despatch from Philadelphia the Same day you telegraphed Judge Wait to meet a gentleman the second day after & then was necessarily compelled to go East & only returned on Friday last. I would also congratulate you upon the reception given you

at Jacksonville (which certainly was most flattering) not only to yourself but your friends & by the way in this neighborhood those Washburn men are to all appearances & by their admissions gratified with the defeat of their own man. But as you remarked at Jacksonville or implied "Contest Over" that all the bickerings pass & be forgotten. My Dear Sir I hope it may be my fortune to meet you before you leave for Washington but if otherwise you will Carry not only the best wishes of myself but of many for your future Success. May it be as glorious as the past. If Convenient we would be most happy to entertain you at our house. Shall be happy to hear of you & from you whenever Convenient.

Hon Richard Yates

Sir

I beg leave to express the thanks of the Illinois Soldiers in the 66th Ills vet. vol. for your Strong and Manly appeal to the General Assembly in their behalf, and to assure you of their continued regards. Your course throughout your term as Executive of the State has ellicited their warmest admiration and produced a feeling of friendship scarcely ever shown towards a Statesman of any party. Struggling against every effort of a disloyal Legislature to [injure?] the Union Cause and consequently the reputation of Illinois Soldiers, you have manfully faced the enemies of the government and defeated their every attempt to produce anarchy and disenssion. For this we thank you and Shall continue to Show our appreciation of your conduct on every occasion.

We are entirely Satisfied with the Governor elect, who was our choice for governor as were

you for the Senate. Every Sentiment uttered in your late message meets a cordial reception from all the Soldiers rank and file. Have not heard a word of fault, but many of praize.

Carry out such Sentiments throughout your present term of office, and you will continue to receive their good will as you will that of every loyal man of the land. We have begun to tremble for the action of the National Congress. Theirs is so much of wavering - of doubt - of fear to proceed in cases when there is no precedent. This should not be! Where there is doubt be Radical on the side of Right and Mercy and you will be Successful. Great Men Seek to make precedents and not to follow others. This should be the way to dispose of the Slavery question! Give us assurance that what has destroyed So many noble lives, Shall forever be powerless to destroy others, and we are then possessed of a new incentive for action; a new heart in the Cause.

Mr. Lincoln has proved firm for the Union. He dared to establish a precedent and then dared to uphold it. It has given us Success!

it will give us greater victiries. I mean the Emancipation Proclamation! Take one jot or letter from it and you discourage the enemy. They will think all is lost, and will have no heart to press forward. Success has been ours Since its publication! Defeat will follow its destruction. Then make it binding through Congressional Legislation and you ensure us success, and with that a final, lasting, glorious and valuable Peace.

Deprived of the right of exercising the Republic boon of Suffrage, by injurious State laws, we Claim the privilege of giving our views to those Selected to represent the Sentiments of the loyal of the State. We hope they may have proportionate weight. The main business before Congress is the question of Slavery. It Should be the great work of the Session. When Slavery is properly disposed of you may expect quiet and not before. Without its final Settlement Peace is impossible. Until it is Settled we may prepare for war. A proper decision of the Slavery question will mould the Section of the rebels. A decision will show them what to expect; They are already

possessed of the belief, that Slavery is destroyed. Shall we disappoint them? A "Bill of Colonization" will afford relief; will Settle the rebellion; will give us Peace! I am Strongly opposed to foreign< colonization. It would be injurious to remove so much labor from the Country and no good Statesman will advocate the project. American Colonization will, alone, afford relief. Give us a bill to colonize them in the West or Southwest on the borders to Mexico. By this means we shall place a truly loyal people on our borders. And by using the Able bodied in our Armies Shall thus furnish means to provide for their families.

Can you offer a better plan?

Colonize them and you remove immediately one great cause and objection that the Slaveholders have to entering again the loyal ranks.

Remove the blacks, and the rebels will return to their Allegiances. Though as a general rule I do not approve of any plan to please them, yet if we shorten the war, and thereby save our brave fellows from war, by such a plan is it not well to try it? The two races will be bennefitted by the Separation! If you do not separate them there will be continual trouble between them.

Freedom is a great boon to the Colored man and there is no injustice in removing him from the vicinity of his present habitation. We can afford to be merciful; It is extremely mortifying for the Slaveholder to live with his Slave, free, and thus colonized, that these races may live and prosper in Peace.

I remain very Respectfully Yours

I visited Springfield last week for the purpose of seeing you and to get a recommendation from you to enable me to get an appointment to a clerkship in the Post Office Department at Washington. I waited two days but you did not return I left a letter for you stating what I wanted I enclosed in that letter recommendations from your friend and mine the Hon William Kellogg and Judge Trumball Not hearing from you I concluded the letter did not reach you. I need the situation very much as I have been unfortunate and lost my property by having heavy heavy debts to ( illegible) other people I have been a hard working Republican and above all in my (illegible) to sustain the administration I have two sons now serving in the army as privates One near New Orleans

the other a lad of 18 years with Sherman I was introduced to you some two years ago at the National Hotel at Washington by Judge Kellogg and in company with your self the judge Hon O. M. Hatch and ( Marshall Lamon?) We went up to Grover Theater Now if consistent with your feelings I wish you would write and send to me at this place a letter for the purposes before mentioned

Respectfully Yours

You should see that he has this power no longer as a great majority of his appointments have been very unfortunate thus far. Our Post office which should & which is expected to aid in a political campaign, has not been of the least use to the party since it has been in the present

hands neither did any body connected with it contribute one cent in money or use any exertion personally to aid the election of our ticket. White the collector of Internal Revenue with an office worth as they say) thousands of dollars actually gave the magnificent sum of $20.00 toward the expenses of the campaign. I imagine King in the Springfield District gave more than that. Now if we can expect to carry this county we must have a different state of affairs. Our collector also employs a copperhead of the worst sort as Liquer Inspecter who has always upon every occasion abused the administration without mercy notwithstanding he gets his living by her patronage & on election day he made himself particular obnoxious to loyal men by working for the copperhead ticket

I state these things for the purpose of showing you how necessary it is for us to have a new deal here, if we ever expect to succeed & hope you will work with that view. Mr Dills you are already aware is

a candidate for the Post Mastership & when the proper time arrives I expect to be an an applicant for collecter of Internal Revenue & as you volunteered your assistance whenever I might need the same I take the liberty to ask it when the time arrives soon as the matter of redistricting the state is settled by the legislation I shall then know how to proceed & will write you at the seat of Goverment

Should you have a spare moment before you leave should be glad to hear from you

U. S. Senator from Illinois,

Springfield Illinois,

My Dear Sir.

Allow me to congratulate you upon your election as Senator from Illinois. The meeting of the Illinois Officers now here was very unanimous in wishing so desirable an object and the records were officially seat you by them. They were published in all the papers here at the time. I enclose you a little Editorial that I put in to the "True Delta" of this morning the organ of the Governor and of "all of us"

Personal.

Ex-Gov. Richard Yates, of Illinois, has just been elected United States Senator from that State for six years, from the 4th of March. Gov. Yates is favorably known to all the volunteers of the Prairie State as the soldier's friend, and his name, with that of Morton, of Indiana will be cherished by them for years. Senator Yates is a firm friend of President Lincoln and his administration, and one of the most earnest supporters of the measure to readmit Louisiana as a State.

here, and no one is more heartily rejoiced at the result of our Election in Illinois than Governor Hahn who wishes to be warmly remembered to both yourself and Mrs Yates and who wishes me to tender to you his warmest congratulations.

I hate to trouble you Governor upon a personal matter but I would much like to be continued as a Member of Governor Oglesby's staff the same as I was upon your own. Of course I want no pay and I am only too willing to at all times aid to the extent of my power in any way an Illinois Officer or Soldier as I think they will all, who have ever gone through here or through New York, bear me witness, and if it is not too much trouble Can I request you to speak to the Governor or to General Haynie who will

Yours Very Truly.

James. T. Tucker.

"Personal"

Governor Yates.

Special Dispatch to The Chicago Evening Journal.

St. Louis, January 10.

The Springfield (Ill.) correspondent of the Democrat writes:

"The friends of Governor Yates are forming a powerful combination for future political purposes. Governor Yates is to be rallied around as the future candidate of the Northwest for the Presidency. His friends now proclaim him as fully installed as the legitimate successor of Douglas, and as a man whose destiny in the future is predetermined by his successful career hitherto.
