I then thought, and still think, the salvation of the country depended upon it, but now, I have been idle, supposing your election to the U.S. Senate a fixed fact, but here I learn from Col. I have to day written to Alex. McCoy, to let him know that his political salvation depends on his keeping clear of this combination.

Dear Governor.

I wrote you to day by express. I write to add thereto that Taylor made a point that the original scheme was abandoned when Clark refused to weaken the order himself. Of course he is a lying rascal but he has Young on his side from interest_ I found Dickey disposed to treat the matter very fairly, but he told me frankly that he would not bring suit and that Taylor not being able get any Republican lawyer to help him wanted to go to Grundy Co - We'll (illegible) (Farwell?) & myself thought we had much rather foot the difference ourselves than to have you further annoyed by the d-d rascal.

My brother is at Memphis and desires letters of introduction from you to Fred Herbert and John A. (Loqau?)_ You will oblige me if you will send him such. He may desire to introduce some of his friends there to them. Please make them broad enough to cover the case.
