Most of the Cabinet ordered a set, as did scores of well-known men in the capital and in New Yorks's financial district. Hurlbut & Williams published the set 1863. It is unknown what became of Lincoln's copy of vol. 1.

To the third he answers that he became indebted to said Bryan in the sum of $367.25 cents for the rent of a certain farm that he gave said Bryan a note on or about the 1st of Dec 1838 and due one year after date for the sum of $30, and he thinks some few cents, and in relation to said note he states that he does not now know who holds the same, that he does not know, nor has he any means of knowing that it has not been assigned by said Bryan before it became due-that he is entitled to a credit for said indebtedness of $32.73 cents for which sum a judgement has been rendered against him as a garnishee in a case before justice Keys of Raborg & Shaffner against said Bryan, of $190 paid said Bryan on the 17th of Dec 1838, as per receipt herewith exhibited; of $131.78 cents for upon an account due him from said Bryan as per bill of particular herewith

exhibited, of $1.50 cents for half of the expenses of surveying the a farm aforesaid, according to the lease of the same, and the whole of which expense said Kreigh has paid-and of $3.50 cents for seven days attendance on this court in this case, the agregate sum of which credits being deducted from the aggregate sum of his said indebtedness leaves as he believes the afore said sum of $40.47 cents-

To the fourth interrogatory he says that said indebtedness by him to said Bryan is now due and has been since the 1st day of March last

And now having fully answered he prays to be discharged &c.

March 13th 64

My Dear Mrs Alexander:

Ever since your departure to Kentucky, I have frequently determined to write to you for knowing full well, the trials you had to pass through this past winter my sincerest sympathies, were with you. Yet now, in your hour of heart rending bereavement how much I have grieved with you, tongue, cannot tell, your sorrows, have only opened my own bleeding wounds afresh earth, can afford, no balm, for

[written vertically across this page]
Dear little Taddie sends his love to you the boys not forgetting little "Junebug"

such bereavements, as we have been called upon to pass through. Your lovely family, of little boys, were very dear to me your darling little Carroll, was my especial favorite. My precious Willie, was another of the pure ones, too good for earth, hence early transplanted to a more congenial soil. They are so happy & rejoicing, whilst we are bowed down, for their loss & yet our grief, how natural it is!

Words cannot express, how much, I shall miss your presence at the Soldiers' Home, the coming summer, it was a most unexpected and

inexplicable affair, both to Mr L. & myself, we were really so sincerely attached to your noble Husband & yourself, your kindness to us, was so great, at all times, that we shall always feel under obligations & in coming years, I trust we may meet, my acquaintance, with you, has been, in such a time of deep sorrow, that I have always felt, in my nervous, miserable state, I was not able to do myself justice. I am indebted to you, whilst, in such moods, for many genial, pleasant hours, and if I were, now, with you we could freely weep together. The loss of my noble beautiful boy, is as keen a pang

to me, now, as it was at first, indeed, I realise it more, only the grave, can close upon, such afflictions. I have taken the great liberty of sending you a little package, it was a small part of a supply, I brought from home, three years since, not knowing whether, we had not to supply the table, in the W. H. I am sure, as a housekeeper, you will excuse, my sending such a poor offering. I trust, when your cares & feelings will permit, you will write to me, with love to your children & friends, I remain ever truly

[written vertically across this page] Dear little Taddie sends his love to you the boys not forgetting little "Junebug"

such bereavements, as we have been called upon to pass through.

My Dear Mrs Shearer

For some days past, particularly since the fourth, I have anticipated writing you a letter and give you an account of some of us on [May?] day. We had a children's and grown people's picnic on that day, out at Col McClernand's farm, for the first time since you left, had the pleasure of meeting your good sister. You can perhaps imagine how much you were missed & how frequently your name was mentioned on that day. Pray how were you passing the time?

We are having very warm weather. I trust among the hills, you are not passing through the same fiery ordeal we are. Our summer thus far, has been rather pleasant than otherwise between strawberry & raspberry parties & latterly some select tea drinkings, our warm weather is almost half gone. Yet withall, I am generally very lonely. If I still have Mary, the same girl I have had for some time, and I see no reason to expect a change, I shall be willing to shelter her in the winter more especially as Robert leaves the first of September, & I fear I shall grow cowardly again. I have attended a very sad funeral today. Mrs Walters only promising son, was drowned two days since, in the Illinois river. the family is heart broken. There is so much to sadden us in life, and so little to make us wish to cling to it as we do. I have not yet learned, dear friend, to look over the way with a calm heart, I truly believe I shall never cease to miss you.

Mrs McClernands health has improved a good deal. She had some idea of going to some springs in Virginia, I am almost disposed to think she will not go. You speak of visiting New York In September, you will doubtless have a pleasant time. I should like to fly away and be at rest, this summer, yet I remember that I have taken mine ease so extensively. I miss our cosy meetings of the olden time & when I think you will never return here I am sad indeed. We have at least the opportunity of frequent interchange of letters I hope you will frequently remember me in that way. Remember me kindly to the Dr & boys. Hoping soon to hear from you.
