His Excellency Richard Yates

Gov. of Illinois

Sir

There are many urging the establishment of a general hospital in the North West where our brothers & sons who have fought so bravely and nobly to sustain our goverment and country from destruction by traitors and enemies - where they can be properly and quickly cured of diseases incident to Southern Campaigns which it seems can not be cured in the army hospitals farther South.

All will agree that the Government ought to Establish a hospital some where in the North West, and it is of great importance that a location should be selected containing the requisites, and there is no place all things considered more desirable than Fulton. Lumber and all building materials are cheaper than any other part of the State, and can be had in abundance. Provisions and marketing can be furnished a great deal cheaper than on the Lake Shore, with an abundance of pure water, and one of the most healthy and desirable locations in the State and among other important advantages this place possesses over some others, are that it is accessible by River and Rail Road

Quite a number of soldiers have come home from the army discharged - reduced to a mere skeleton, with the camp

diarrhea and in two or three months restored to health

I speak of these things from experience. My own son came home on a furlough in June very much reduced having had the camp diarrhea for four months, and the army surgeon told him he could not be cured south if at all, in six weeks we sent him back cured, and he has not been troubled with it since.

Knowing you to be the soldiers friend, and a true patriot is my apology for intruding upon your time

Very Respectfully your obt Srvt

C W Aylsworth

Ansd Oct 23 - 63

A - Aylsworth. C. W.

Fulton

Whiteside Co Ills Oct 12th

Thinks the above the best place for a General Hospital for the Northwest.

Gov Yates

Dear Sir

Disappointed, in Consequence of the refusal of Col. Richardson to accept the position of Brig: Gen: tendered him by the President, in receiving a good place in the Army and determined to contribute my mite in aid of the cause to all of us most dear, within the last few weeks, I joined the 43rd Reg Ill Vol at Chicago and am now a Recruit at this place. Since being here I am led to believe there is a probability of my obtaining an appointment from Washington and desire that a sufficient amount of influence may be exerted, in addition to that already tendered, to render the object secure.

A Governors influence is always valuable and yours I presume is particularly so, on account of the intimate social and political relations you hold with the President.

I therefor will consider it a special favor if you will write a brief letter to the President on the subject and enclose it in one to me, to go forward with other documents which may be sent.

If, in the great multitude of your acquaintance, my name as been forgotten, I may remind you of several interviews last winter at the Ex. Mansions, during which you kindly tendered your good offices on my behalf, in the event of a position being vacant in your gift, which could be filled without serious prejudice to those already in the service. You may remember my having letters from a number of leading gentlemen in Quincy in addition to which I might now refer to many others in Civil and military life.

The place I desire is that of Aid on the staff of a Brig. Gen.

Excuse the prolixity of my letter and believe me

Very Sincerely

Your Friend

Gov Yates

Your Friend

Chs. Rowland
