The bearer Dr. L. I. Hewing, accompanied by Dr. G. W. [illegible] and several ladies, desires to proceed to Memphis to accept the position of surgeon of one of the U.S. hospitals.

Dr. Hewing is a strictly loyal and respectable citizen of this State whose statements in regard to the loyalty of the parties accompanying him may be relied upon. You will oblige me by affording him and his party and facilities in your power to enable them to reach Memphis without delay and with little inconvenience as possible
