Canton, Aug. 24th/64.
Gov. R. Yates
Dear Sir, Your communication of the 16th inst. is received and contents noted, and in reply I have to say.
There is an effort being made in this County to raise a Company to join the Regiment authorized to be raised for State defence. The Company now numbers from Twentyfive to thirty men, recruited by George Luckey. - with a fair prospect of being filled to the minimum number.
There is also a movement to organize Militia companies in this County, which I think will meet with fair success. None
are solicited to join but those of unquestionable loyalty, and in case of emergency, I think you might safely rely on One hundred & fifty or two hundred men from this town. Can a Company organized here receive arms and equipments from the State? Will you send such instructions as are necessary to enable us to so organize?
Any information that I am able to give you upon subjects connected with our public or political safety, is at your command.
Truly Yours &c.
