Hon Sir

I did not succeed

in obtaining the agency for which you

so kindly recommended me. I do not myself

know of anything which I could do

in the present state of our country

and wish to know what chance you

think there is of my obtaining a

commission in the service. I would

like a staff appointment and have

thought of Genl Hurlburt who is a

warm friend of my father and I think

should there be a vacancy upon his staff

I might get it with the recommendation

of yourself and my father I wish you

would advise me
