Head Quarters, Western Department,
Sept. 21. 1861
Gov. R. Yates.
Dear Sir
Upon my recommendation you appointed some time ago Chs. During, a Drillmaster with rank of Lieutenant.
I am informed that he aspires to be a Major in the “Koerner Regiment, and failing in that, he is now stirring up strife & commotion, wants to form another Regiment & the like foolery. It is of the utmost importance to fill up Regiments, and fatal to prevent it; I therefore ask for a removal of the man, who when not gratified in his wishes, proves an ungrateful rascal. I expect to be off soon.
Yours truly
G. Koerner
Gus. Koerner as to Chas During, a drill master &c who wants to raise regiment
