Dear Sir-
The undersigned are informed that John J. Mudd Esq of Chicago, desires to join our army in some capacity during the present War. We have been acquainted with him for a number of years, whilst he was engaged in the Commission of business at St. Louis Mo & afterward at Chicago Ill, and known him to be an A No 1 man both as regards honesty and capacity & loyally to our Government, and will fill with credit to himself & service to the country any situation he may desire, and any favor you can consistently do him will greatly oblige.
