Dear Governor
Dear Sir
Your favor of the with enclosure as stated, is received. To day Taylors man Calkins has a letter from Taylor dated New York Dec 7th in which Taylor tells Calkins to change the account with us to some other name - saying he had been "forced" to give a check which he did not intend to pay - our attorney tells us which by your giving us notice of the check you received you have created an undoubted liar. You can rest assured we will do all in our power to protect your interest - have not yet received your letter enclosing the check. I think or hope when Taylor finds he is in a trap he
will consent that you be allowed to take your money - I had occasion to use you today & took the liberty to ask you by telegraph to go - and see Gen Stoneman Chief of Cavalry Bureau & see if Capt Patten could not be placed in funds to pay for Horses delivery in this department. Your friend George J Bergiss of Galesburgh has a contract to deliver horses. We have been advancing him money he now owes us over one Hundred Thousand dollars, which is hourly distressing us. I hope soon to have the pleasure to meet you in Chicago. Some of our friends are anxiously looking for your return
Very Sincerely Your Friend
