Senate Chamber, Dec. 19- 1860
Hon. Richard Yates,
My Dear Sir;
i wrote you a day or two since in great haste, I scarcely remember exactly what I perhaps may repeat ideas then suggested.
It seems to me it would have an excellent effect on the public mind just now for you to take strong Union ground in your message I repudiate the idea of succession being anything else than resolution & rebellion; and if resolutions could be passed with unanimity at an early day by the Legislature seconding these since & pledging the men and means of the whole state to respond to any calls of the Federal Government to maintain the Constitution & the
Union in their integrity, the effort I doubt not would be most salutary on the country.
                                                                         Yours Truly
                                                                          Lyman Trumbull
