            Description
On June 6, 1917, the San Salvador volcano erupted in El Salvador. One day later, the British Royal Engineers detonated nineteen deep mines at the Battle of Messines, destroying the German ridge defenses and leading them to believe it was an earthquake. On June 26, General John J. Pershing and the American reinforcements landed in France to begin training for combat.
