Dear Sir
I enlisted as a private in the Engineer Regiment last fall, after its organization, trusting to fortune, for promotion afterwards, in this, I have been disappointed thus far, no vacancy occuring but that its place had been promised to others. I ask you for a Lieutenants Commission some where finding that I cannot support a large family where I am
By so doing you will confer a favor upon one who fought for his country in the Mexican war and whose ambition is to win by good conduct his country's favor and esteem.
For fitness I refer you to my comrades in arms
